Meet Your Midwife

Kera Lyman, LM CPM  Wisconsin Licensed Midwife • Certified Professional Midwife

Evidence-Based Home Birth Midwife serving the Fox Valley and Northeast Wisconsin

My call to midwifery began my own births, my own loss, my own healing, and the realization that maternity care can either strengthen or harm a family.

I became a midwife to offer families something different:

safe, informed, family- centered care that makes room for your autonomy and innate wisdom.

What I Believe

Midwifery is not simply about delivering babies; it is about walking with families.

I believe in:

  • Preventative, whole-person care.

  • Nutrition, movement, connection, and emotional support.

  • Evidence-based practice and emergency readiness; I balance traditional midwifery with conventional tools, such as IV therapy, oxygen, and medications when needed, using evidence-based research and protocols to keep clients as safe as possible.

  • Shared decision-making: This is YOUR  birth. My role is to inform, guide, and support- but your autonomy remains central.

  • Respect for physiologic birth

I trust in the body’s innate ability to labor and give birth. My calling is to protect that process, making space for the natural rhythms and hormonal processes to unfold, using intervention only when it’s truly necessary.

Who I Serve

Fox Valley Midwifery supports families in Northeast Wisconsin who desire to make intentional, educated decisions.

I proudly serve families who want:

  • Home birth grounded in safety and evidence

  • VBAC at home with skilled, experienced care

  • Water birth with a licensed midwife

  • Trauma-informed care after previous difficult experiences

  • Continuity of care (one dedicated midwife; your trusted partner from pregnancy to postpartum)

  • Longer, more personal visits held in the comfort of your home

  • Autonomy, respect, and shared decision-making

Your story and your choices are safely guided every step of the way.

My Path to Midwifery

Before becoming a midwife, I spent over six years as a birth doula, bereavement doula, and birth photographer. These roles allowed me to walk closely with families, and deeply shaped the way I show up in my midwifery care.

I completed my midwifery training through the NARM PEP process, working in many different clinical settings under an apprenticeship model. I had the privilege of learning from highly experienced midwives while caring for families through pregnancy, loss, labor and birth, and the postpartum period.

Prior to moving to Wisconsin, I practiced as a primary midwife at Innate Midwifery and Two Leaves Midwifery in Utah. I also worked as an independent contracted midwife in Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho. After relocating to Wisconsin, I worked as a staff midwife at Alba Birth Center before founding Fox Valley Midwifery - and have really fallen in love with all that Wisconsin has to offer!

My specialized trainings include:

  • Spinning Babies®

  • CAPPA International

  • Breech Without Borders (advanced physiologic breech birth delivery)

Together, these experiences have shaped me into a midwife who is both clinically grounded and fiercely committed to informed, family-led care.

My birth stories (What Led Me Here)

My First Birth

I was induced without medical necessity and without understanding the risks involved. I narrowly avoided an emergency cesarean due to induction complications, and the experience left me full of questions. I really dove into educating myself about birth interventions and what true informed consent meant.

My Second Birth

I experienced a stillbirth at 35 weeks, which led to another induction that I had really hoped to avoid. There were so many aspects to birthing a baby that I couldn't take home that I was unprepared for, and the management of my pregnancy and birth opened the door to another perspective on grief and birth, intertwined. This became my motivation to train as a bereavement doula and offer support to other families experiencing the unfair reality of loss.

My Third Birth

I had planned for an unmedicated hospital birth, but ended up with a manipulated, abusive experience at the hands of my provider that brought with it a lot of physical and emotional harm. My recovery was very difficult, with severe postpartum depression and rage that took me to the darkest place I've ever been. Again, my view was shifted- this time involving birth trauma and postpartum care for mothers. Trauma-informed care became a cornerstone of my work.

My Fourth Birth

This birth was healing and showed me how empowering a supported and informed birth can be. After switching providers several times, I finally found a midwife in my third trimester. I birthed my baby in the water, with respect from the people surrounding me, and for the first time, birthing, I felt safe, seen, and prioritized.

My passion for informed birth was ignited.

When I am not at a birth...

You’ll find me homeschooling my children, dreaming about building a small homestead, and enjoying the beauty of Wisconsin life. I love my family deeply and treasure time spent together- especially traveling, hiking, camping, and taking long road trips through beautiful places.
Our days are shared with our dog, Badger, two cats, Flora and Bugsy, a bearded dragon named Puff, and a flock of chickens who keep us connected to the rhythms of home.
On quieter days, I’m usually baking, gardening, or getting lost in a good book.
